Francis Plagne Band, Amy Dickson & Billy Steiger, Choir

Delighted to bring Francis Plagne Band together for a very special one off UK show, joined by Amy Dickson & Billy Steiger and warmed up with some songs from the practicing folk choir based at Cafe OTO.

Tickets are £6 adv / £8 or donation based for those unwaged

https://francisplagne.bandcamp.com/

Frances Plagne is a musician from Melbourne whose work combines songwriting with group improvisation, instrumental abstraction and domestic musique concrète. He has released recordings on Albert's Basement, Black Truffle, Breakdance the Dawn, Kye Records, Penultimate Press and his own Mould Museum label, among others, and recently released collaborative works with crys cole and Andrew Chalk.

He will be accompanied by long-time collaborators James Rushford, on keyboards and medieval-style portative organ, and Joe Talia, on drums. Together they will dip into some material from Plagne's recent and forthcoming releases: songs that hint at melodic satisfaction between rambling instrumental interludes, ambiguous tape interjections and the wheezing breaths of strangled organ pipes.

WIDT

 An audiovisual collaboration of two sisters Antonina Nowacka (voice/processing) and Bogumila Piotrowska (live visuals)

 Oneiric visions guided by abstract, operatic vocals flowing in the jungle of psychedelic visuals, created in real time from scratch, a unique trip into the land of the forgotten, avoided and yet unexperienced.

ZMIJA

 Zmija is a solo performance project by artist Fay Nicolson using the voice, movement and looping to generate polyphonic works in real time. Zmija is sincere grunge ballet, punk musical theatre, medieval avant-garde and corrosive chorale.

LIA MAZZARI

 Lia Mazzari an artist, musician working with cello, whips and prepared objects. Her work as performer is often collaborative combining diverse instruments and sound objects, engaging new audiences through encounters with art in non-conventional spaces. She aims to  create  live and recorded events that embrace the broader sense of sound in space. The importance of site and developing an extended technique with cello, whips  and other localised objects form the crux of her creative practice. She is the founder of Silver Road, a non-profit arts organisation devoted to site-specific and interdisciplinary performance and music. Lia has performed with Ilan Volkov, Takahiro Kawaguchi, Tarek Atoui, Ashley Paul and is part of the Al Fresco Trio, a new collaboration with Sholto Dobie and Tom White.

CHRYSTABEL RILEY

During the late naughties Crystabel Riley toured Japan and Europe using drums, electronics and make-up in noise trio Maria and the Mirrors. This was the start of her interest in patterns on skins - human and drum. She was later encouraged - and welcomed - into the Horse Improvised Music Club by Daniel Thompson and Sue Lynch respectively. This instantly consolidated into weekly playing with Sue, who she still collaborates with. She is currently working on the multi-format duo project @xcrswx with Seymour Wright. This contrasts the LIVE (evolved sounds / patience / relentless) and the ANDROID (cropped media [sounds+visuals] / impatience / InstantPublication).

A launch event for the new Historically Fucked release ALIVEN WOOL, an occasion of sufficient gravity to pull in two of the other best bands (or representatives thereof) currently working within broadly experimental song structures: a full line-up show from TRIPLE NEGATIVE and a solo show from the STILL HOUSE PLANTS' Jess Hickie-Kallenbach.

"The instrumentation is composite, rustic, yet paradoxically sophisticated: piano, 6 string bass banjo, mechanical metronome, tuning forks, claves, hand and foot clapping and tapping, mini amps, amps, subwoofer, microphones, small mix desk, bells, mouth organ fragments, concertina, componiums, "stringin it", audio ducker, drum skins, clockwork motors... "

A rare performance of the astounding music of L'Ocelle Mare is perhaps best trailed by the above instrumental inventory and the promise that Thomas Bonvalet (Powerdove/ Cheval Frise) will bring forth an intense, highly syncopated and ultra focused music from the chattering sonic menagerie it might seem to suggest.

“Set within an electric ancestry that includes Michael Karoli’s solos in Can, the hymnal rock of Popol Vuh’s Daniel Fichelscher and the sonic spaciousness of dub, as well as the emotional punch of John Martyn’s dawn-lit Echoplex epic, ‘Small Hours’.” (Frances Morgan, The Quietus)

:: Dean McPhee ::

Dean McPhee is a solo electric guitarist who combines fluid, chiming melodic lines with shimmering drones and deep layers of decaying delay and echo. He has a unique style of playing which draws together influences from British Folk, Dub, Kosmische, Post Rock and Mali Blues and his music has a hypnotic and dreamlike quality. His latest album “Four Stones” is due to be released on Hood Faire (a label run collectively by Dean, Sam McLoughlin and David Chatton-Barker) in January '18 and brings together three tracks that were originally released as part of limited edition Folklore Tapes cassette compilations along with two new tracks that use a kick drum pedal, adding a percussive undercurrent to his music. For this gig Dean will be playing to abstract films by the video feedback artist Barry Hale.

“Definitely one of the leading contemporary guitar stylists in the UK, and in the world” (Steve Barker, BBC "On the Wire")

"One of the UK's most interesting solo guitarists" (John Mulvey, Uncut Magazine)

:: Sam McLoughlin ::

Sam McLoughlin plays homemade instruments and contraptions, along with guitar, analog synths, harmonium and pump organ. Sometimes he sings songs, other times he combines handmade Moondog-like percussion with microphone feedback, synth drones and unpredictable bowed textures to produce improvised music with magical and shamanic overtones. Sam recently released the album “Flaming Liar” on Them There Records and has previously released music on Andy Votel’s Twisted Nerve as well as Folklore Tapes, Pre Cert Entertainment and Hood Faire.

:: David Chatton-Baker ::

David Chatton-Barker is the co-founder and captain of the highly regarded Folklore Tapes label which was recently described by Brainwashed.com as “possibly the most unique and fascinating label around”. As well as being a visual artist and film-maker David also specialises in playful and atmospheric collages of sound, dictaphone recordings and live improvisation. Like Sam he also builds his own very inventive and visually striking homemade instruments and sound making devices which he uses to perform live, along with projections and ritualistic interventions.

:: Hugh Metcalfe ::

Hugh Metcalfe is a musician and filmmaker from London and Suffolk, England. He is best known as the promoter of The Klinker in London, a club which he has run in various venues since at least 1982 (stories vary). He plays guitar, violin, hi-hat and gas mask. He performs in several bands including Bicycle Clip Sex, The Small Faeces, The Cross-Dressed Quartet and Fuck Off Batman. He also performed with noted sound poet Bob Cobbing, saxophonist Lol Coxhill and dancer Jennifer Pike in Birdyak, up until Cobbing's death in 2002.

Metcalfe's experimental film work began in 1978, and uses 8mm film methods to produce silent films, often used later as a springboard for free musical improvisation, either by Metcalfe himself or other musicians. During some of the 1980s, Metcalfe ran a record label, 'Klinkerzoundz', releasing records by Metcalfe, Cobbing, the Bow Gamelan Ensemble, and more.

The Klinker has, in its 30-year lifespan, acquired a reputation as London's leading forum for free improvisation and marginal music and performance.

:: Bare Bones ::

Duo of Jason Steel (solo, Hold Music, The Owl Service) and Dom Cooper (United Bible Studies, Circle/Temple, Unknown Heretic, Zensunni, Unit One, The Straw Bear Band, The Owl Service). Their latest release ‘Moon Phases’ is informed by improvisatory techniques, ethnographic field recordings, and the sonic spaces of Dub; a narcoleptic Ennio Morricone soundtrack. The music is carved out of ritualistic drones, creating nuanced textured soundscapes. Tracks inhabit a moonlit world, reminiscent of the hazy pacing of Peter Fonda’s film ‘The Hired Hand’ or the fragmentary/searching writing of Fernando Pessoa’s ‘The Book of Disquiet’. Bare and layered, simple and nuanced, Moon Phases has a somnambulistic grace all its own. Simon Lewis of Terrascope - 'They take the audience deep into the heart of sonic ritual'.

:: Robert Sunday ::

A solo acoustic singer-songwriter who combines elements of traditional folk, Americana, poetry, and cinematic allusions. He played his first gig at Cecil Sharp House in March 2011 on the release of his debut EP ‘Butterfly Hairslide’ on the Rif Mountain label. Since then he has played regularly in London. ‘Halcyon Bloom’ and ‘Cold Little Roses are his latest EPs. The ever-chipper Mr. Sunday deliver more trademark lyrical gold, set to melodies that would make a hungover Kris Kristofferson blush (in his prime!). Sunday deals with concepts around memory, love and time. For fans of Bill Fay, Palace Music & Lee Hazlewood. Stark and quite wonderful.

https://robertsunday.bandcamp.com/

:: Hold Music ::

are Jason Steel (Guitar/Banjo/Voice) & Daniel Gardner (percussion).The duo’s eponymous debut outing offers tightly wound compositions that twist & contort in unexpected directions; spare yet expansive, precise yet rambling. Gardner’s percussion is locked into Steel’s deft string work throughout. Consisting of four tracks over 30 minutes, recorded live with John Hannon (James Blackshaw, Chris Corsano). The lyrics touch on Appalachian murder ballads, original sin and poor grammar. At turns pretty - ritualistic - odd. A banger, for sure.

:: Nancy Wallace ::

is a singer and musician from East London, having been born and raised in a folk-singing family in a Suffolk seaside town. She came to notice singing with the Memory Band and later as part of the cult alt-folk collective The Owl Service. A guitarist and concertina player (as were her father and grandfather before her), her approach to both instruments, and her interpretations of both traditional material and her own songs, set her apart on the contemporary folk scene. Her solo releases began with the critically acclaimed Young Hearts EP and her debut full length album, Old Stories, released to glowing reviews, garnering her a cover feature in fRoots magazine and a BBC Folk Awards nomination. She has performed throughout Britain and Europe, including at festivals such as The Green Man, Glastonbury, End Of The Road, Sidmouth Folk Week, The Big Chill and Towersey Folk Festival. She is currently writing and recording material for her next ‘proper’ album. She returns to the UK for a short tour in winter 2017/18.

Immensely glad to welcome Powerdove aka Annie Lewandowski joined by Thomas Bonvalet and Chad Popple , performing their first full-band show in the UK. In this combination Annie’s songwriting is transformed into singular, arresting, and strange pop music, that sees graceful melodies set against raucous percussion arrangements; a music that “rumbles with immediate beauty and unsettling events”. They are joined by the awesome American composer / performer Ashley Paul, known for her tense, raw and delicate compositions, playfully combining introverted melodies, free-form song-like arrangements and an unadorned approach to improvisation.

Rhodri Davies & Will Guthrie (duo)

Muckle Mouth & The Dentist present

A first time duo between Welsh harpist Rhodri davies and Australian percussionist Will Guthrie, two musicians who have contributed a huge amount to Europe's underground, new music and improv worlds. Both phenomenal improvisers, alchemistic in their attention to sound, fearlessly experimental in their respective approaches - this is a rare chance to experience two of contemporary music's longstanding and experimental musicians in dialogue for the first time.

RHODRI DAVIES

Rhodri Davies was born in 1971 in Aberystwyth, Wales and now lives in Swansea. He plays harp, electric harp, live-electronics and builds wind, water and fire harp installations. His regular groups include: a duo with John Butcher, The Sealed Knot, a trio with David Toop and Lee Patterson, Common Objects, Cranc, a trio with John Tilbury and Michael Duch, SLW and Apartment House. In 2008 he collaborated with the visual artist Gustav Metzger on ‘Self-cancellation’, a large-scale audio-visual collaboration in London and Glasgow. He also performs and researches contemporary music. New pieces for harp have been composed for him by: Eliane Radigue, Christian Wolff, Ben Patterson, Alison Knowles, Michael Pisaro, Carole Finer, Mieko Shiomi, Radu Malfatti and Yasunao Tone.

WILL GUTHRIE

Will Guthrie is an Australian drummer / percussionist living in France. He works in many different settings of music: live performance, improvisation and studio composition using various combinations of drums, percussion, objects, junk, amplification and electronics.

He plays solo and in various projects such as THE AMES ROOM (with Jean-Luc Guionnet & Clayton Thomas) and THE SOMMES ENSEMBLE (with Pierre-Antoine Badaroux, Julien Desperez & Maxime Petit). His music has been released on labels such as Gaffer Records, Erstwhile, Clean Feed, 23five, Editions Mego, Ipecac, iDEAL and his own label Antboy Music.

While studying jazz and improvised music(s) at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, alongside Ren Walters he started the weekly concert series 'Improvised Tuesdays', now known as the Make It Up Club and is Australia's longest running performance space dedicated to experimental and improvised musics. In Nantes, France he is part of the collective CABLE# which also organizes regular concerts and an annual festival. He also runs the experimental improvised CD label and mail-order service; ANTBOY MUSIC.

Lorena Alvarez + Victor Herrero + Ivor Kallin

Muckle Mouth and The Dentist present

Victor Herrero returning to The Dentist, this time with friend and collaborator, Asturian singer Lorena Alvarez making a UK debut. Their music is both playful, intuitive and respectively steeped in Spanish folk traditions. They will be joined by unique improviser and viola player Ivor Kallin from Glasgow.

VICTOR HERRERO

Victor Herrero was introduced to music in his childhood while living in the famous monastery Franco erected in a mountain valley west of Madrid (El Valle de los Caídos). There he learned to sing Gregorian and Mozarabic chant under the guidance of Benedictine monks. As a teenager back in his hometown Toledo he formed a psych-rock outfit called ‘Cicely’, which grew into a popular Madrid-based band. The group lasted 8 years, after which Victor recorded and released an album of his solo piano compositions "Connotaciones para Piano" (Sello Autor - SGAE, 2006) under his old stage name “Victor Cicely”.

Shortly after this period, Victor met his wife the US artist Josephine Foster, and they began to collaborate and perform together in concert as well as in the recording studio. During the last couple years Victor has been involved in many different projects and journeys. Travelling, recording or playing with artists like Michael Gira, Keiji Haino, Luzmila Carpio, Baby Dee, Master Musicians of Joujouka, Vinicio Capossela, Sonny Simmons, Ed Askew, Arlt, Marisa Terzi, Alasdair Roberts, Eric Chenaux, Tomi Simatupang, Alex Neilson, Paz Lenchantin, Gyda Valtysdottir, Abdellah el Gourd, Michael Zerang, Nat Baldwin, Lorena Álvarez, Shahzad Ismaily, etc.

LORENA ALVAREZ

Lorena Álvarez is a singer/songwriter born and raised in San Antolin de Ibias, a small village in the north of Spain, where she first became acquainted with music from popular folklore groups. Through the radio and some cassettes, she became familiar with different musical styles like Spanish rhumba, contemporary pop and American singer songwriters (like her beloved Violeta Parra) to which her music is in debt.

After publishing “La Cinta” (Sones, 2011), her first LP “Anónimo” (Sones 2012), and the Dinamita E.P (Producciones Doradas, 2014), she has overstepped the fixed boundaries of popular Spanish music and placed them in new contexts, where tradition and contemporaneity fit together effortlessly.

“Halfway between folk-pop, traditional music from Asturias and a conscious punk attitude, “Anónimo” is the closest a Spanish artist will ever be to Jonathan Richman” Mondo Sonoro Magazine

IVOR KALLIN

Ivor Kallin grew up in Strathbungo in the south side of Glasgow a long time ago, moving to London in the late seventies. He is essentially an improviser, playing viola with string trio Barrel (www.hannahmarshall.net) and the London Improvisers Orchestra (both projects with CDs on Emanem), and also on a solo viola pibroch/improv digital release on Linear Obsessional. He also plays bass with Ya Basta,Glowering Figs and previously with the London Electric Guitar Orchestra (213 Records) and the Horseless Headmen (North Circular Records).

He has also been known to spout dreadful poetry as Ambrosia Rasputin on Resonance FM and in performance with various unsuspecting collaborators. He has worked with John Bisset to create a plethora of short, yet singular, films as 213TV (Youtube), and together released A Schlep from Strathbungo (213 Records) featuring guitar and aforementioned poetry on location in Glasgow.

Léonore Boulanger + Ebenezer + Howie Reeve

Muckle Mouth and The Dentist are pleased to present:

UK debut for French singer Léonore Boulanger, who combines chanson traditions, surrealistic ballads with sound objects and prepared instrumentation, alongside new trio Ebenezer and avantpop troubadour Howie Reeve from Glasgow.

http://www.wegottickets.com/event/374284

LÉONORE BOULANGER

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dn-wQDnw7HU

Léonore Boulanger studied drama, experimental jazz improvisation and Persian music in Paris. She sings in French, German, improvises some unknown languages. Her work reflects her wide interest in African folk and in composers such as George Crumb, Teiji ito, Harry Partch and singer Meredith Monk. Along with the sometimes clear, sometimes onomatopoeic Léonore, JeanDaniel Botta and Laurent Series give life to partially self invented instruments and all sorts of collected objects. They bring the French and German languages into corkscrewshaped dances with rickety electricity.

As well as being Leonore’s debut in the UK, she will be presenting her third studio album Feigen Feigen released September 12th on Ana Ott and Le Saule.

"When Léonore Boulanger possesses the stage with her shamanic, nomad universe and bewitching chants and instruments, is it "chanson underground"? Might be, but this is for sure a nice experience that we are not used to"

EBENEZER

Ebenezer are Joe Carvell, Emilio Reyes and Gabriel Bristoh, a trio of South London based musicians who found eachother through their mutual love of Darius Milhaud, Bach, Sun Ra, drinking tea and South London Portuguese cafe/bars.

They've been composing and improvising with eachother for over a year now. They've been talking about making a record one day.

HOWIE REEVE

Howie Reeve is an acoustic avantpop solo bass artist from Glasgow. His work with other well known faces in Glasgow‘s avantfolk, postpunk and free jazz scenes has made Reeve a linchpin of the city’s underground music scene. Having spent time in a number of acts like Shlebie and Tattie Toes, Howie decided to go it alone a couple of years back and has already toured throughout Europe and Japan and released two solo albums as well as a now sold out 7” with Minutemen bassist Mike Watt.

Alasdair Roberts & James Green: Plaint of Lapwing + Elle Osborne

The Dentist and Muckle Mouth are pleased to present

Alasdair Roberts & James Green

We are lucky to have Scottish folk singer Alasdair Roberts and multi-instrumentalist James Green of The Big Eyes Family Players, following the release of Plaint of Lapwing LP, their collaborative recording project; two years in the making and exquisitely materialised by Clay Pipe Music.

The pair will present, for the first time, the live incarnation of their playfully crafted, idiosyncratic music, which weaves sources as seemingly disparate as Bavarian traditional tunes, Greek mythology and 70's folk-rock, mostly accompanied by the airy melodies of Green's harmoniflute, a 19th century French instrument somewhere between a harmonium and an accordion.

Elle Osborne

Singer and fiddler Elle Osborne was raised amongst folk singers on the North Sea Coast of Lincolnshire. Inspired by the language and beauty of English folksong, Elle performs her own songs, as well as re-interpretations of traditional songs (many of which she nicked from her Dad). The Wire said, "There is a certain edge of the world starkness to her voice that blends magically with her English folk roots..."

Her stunning fourth album “It’s Not Your Gold Shall Me Entice”, features recurring collaborators Alasdair Roberts, Alex Neilson, and Mike Hastings of Trembling Bells.
